  • “The best service I’ve ever had at an auto repair shop! I had a problem with the locks, and they fixed it like an old school mechanic would, instead of just ordering new parts. Because they did that, the actual cost came in way lower than the bid they gave me!”

  • “I found them in the Good Service Guide, and I have been very pleased with them! They’ve treated me terrifically. My car was done on-time, and there were no surprises. Thanks for the nice, cool waiting room and the ice water, Oakland Auto Works!”

  • “I’ve been with them since they opened in 1986, and referred literally hundreds of people to them. I don’t know of any other company that you can trust and rely on as much as them. They treat each person like an important individual. That is so rare these days.”

Many women feel intimidated in auto repair shops. We were therefore impressed when we reviewed a random sample of CSAA (“Triple A”) customer report cards at Oakland Auto Works. Not only were all the responses favorable – 90% came from women.

“I don’t know why so many women expressed enthusiasm,” says owner Glenn Poy-Wing. “We have plenty of male customers, too!”

‘Honest’,’ ‘customer-friendly,’ ‘trustworthy’ were the words that kept appearing on these hand-written client evaluations. Oakland Auto Works was listed as Best East Bay Mechanic by the Bay Guardian’s 1999 “Best of the Bay” poll, and they’re a Gold Shield-rated auto shop by the state Bureau of Auto Repair.

Despite the kudos, Oakland Auto Works is still a down-to-earth neighborhood auto repair shop, albeit one you can’t miss, since it’s located right next to Kaiser Hospital on MacArthur, at Broadway.

Oakland Auto Works specializes in Japanese cars – specifically, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Nissan and Acura. They don’t work on any other makes or models, preferring to concentrate on what they do best.

“I opened this shop 10 years ago because I wanted to change people’s perceptions about auto mechanics,” Glenn explains. “I think that the auto repair industry has the wrong attitude towards its customers.

“I try to educate and empower customers so that they can make the decision that’s right for them.

“‘Happy cars and happy people’”—that’s my motto!”

Glenn has three master-certified mechanics, plus Cile, his customer service person. They offer a free shuttle service to and from downtown Oakland and Jack London Square, or they’ll take you to wherever is most convenient for transportation.

Note that they work by appointment only. That way, they can (usually) get your car in and out in one day.
