  • “If only he could work on my American car, we would never have to go anywhere else. He is honest and easy to understand. He’s got a great sense of humor, and he doesn’t expect car owners to be mechanics. I always have a good experience.”

  • “I’ve been a happy customer of Peter’s for many years— since the late 80’s. He does great work, has taken great care of my car & kept me driving. I give him an A+ on service, and I trust his work implicitly.”

  • “He is scrupulously honest. He covers his work very well, thoroughly explains things, and only does work that needs to be done. He’s a consummate Berkeley mechanic.”

Now at a new and more convenient Berkeley location is what the East Bay Express has called the “Best One-Man Auto Repair Shop and/or Counseling Center.” Over the past 20 years, hundreds of mature and over-ripe vehicles have been revived by Peter Mitchell, a charismatic mechanic who dispenses auto therapy and advice with the reassuring bedside manner of an old family physician.

Peter doesn’t believe in repairing a car until it’s broken. “You’ve still got another 5,000 miles to run on this thing,” he’ll say. “Change the oil and call me in six months!”

Specializing in Asian cars, Peter’s Automotive Service can help you postpone the inevitable purchase of a new car, while keeping you safely on the road. So reliable and reassuring are Peter’s ministrations that customers occasionally seek his guidance on other matters as well.

Although classical music fills the air, a pleasing patina of grease lets you know that you are in the presence of a true mechanic who is not afraid to get his hands dirty (but not your vehicle).

A Berkeley fixture for over 20 years, Peter’s loyal following includes Cal professors and expatriate New Yorkers like himself. His prices are very reasonable, and he does all the work himself. You get his personal attention. He completes most repairs in one day.

Peter’s new location on Cedar (at Grant) is within walking distance of North Berkeley BART, UC campus and downtown Berkeley. He’s open Monday-Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Fridays 8:30 a.m.–noon.

His enthusiastic customers keep him busy, so it’s best to call him and schedule an appointment a few days ahead.
